FIFA President Gianni Infantino spoke at a press conference about the possibility of Mexico and the United States joining their national soccer leagues in a single competition. It is a possibility to which, he assures, he sees a great future. In fact, it is expected that it can compete in importance with the major leagues of the European continent that today represent the elite in football.

"I think that the potential of the United States and Mexico is enormous. If you could unite the two it would be incredible and it could well be the best league in the world", said the manager. In the past, FIFA had scrapped the idea of multicountry football leagues. However, since the arrival of Infantino to the organization, in 2016, this format has gained strength. The detail, in this case, is that the head of FIFA wants to boost the level of football outside Europe and sees in North America, host of the 2026 World Cup, the perfect place.

"If we want teams to be at the highest level around the world, not just in Europe, we need new ideas. We see potential in North America, both economically and in football terms. I am confident they will make the best decisions", Infantino added. He also recalled that "any discussion about the organization of the competition, respecting the rules of the federations, FIFA and with the agreement of all, is interesting and we see it in a positive way."

Faced with this proposal from the head of the world football governing body, Major League Soccer (MLS) commissioner Don Garber admitted that while "the opportunity is great", the project is still "very far" from being realized. Anyway, all change begins with an idea. Today, with the idea on the table, it only remains to wait to see what the future holds, with respect to two of the leagues with the most potential in the world.
