Liga MX 2022 has concluded and with it, we already know who is the top scorer of the tournament, so now everyone is wondering, is André Pierre-Gignac the highest scorer foreigner who has played in Mexico?
"I would have loved to play for the Mexican National Team": Andre Pierre-Gignac
The French player who plays for Miguel Herrera's powerful Tigres won the goal-scoring title in Liga MX 2022, having scored 11 goals in the 17 rounds of the tournament.
And this is the third time that the Frenchman has achieved this feat of being crowned the top scorer in Mexican soccer, which is why many of his followers are wondering if he is the highest-scoring foreigner to have played in Liga MX.
The answer is no since many foreigners have played in Mexican soccer and have left their mark with their goals, but no foreigner has scored more goals in Liga MX than Evanivaldo Castro Silva, better known as Cabinho.
The lethal Brazilian striker played for Pumas UNAM from 1974 to 1979, during which time he scored a staggering 166 goals. However, Pumas was not the only club he played for in Mexico.
In addition to playing for the Auriazules, Cabinho also played for Atlante, León, and Tigres, and scored 312 goals in Mexico, making him the highest-scoring foreigner in Mexican soccer.
Although it must also be taken into account that the contexts are very different and when Cabinho played in Mexico, there were still long tournaments that lasted 1 year, not like now that there are two short tournaments a year, which could influence the number of goals a player can score in Mexican soccer.
But this does not detract from the fact that the Brazilian's achievement is a milestone in the history of Mexican soccer, which has just recognized Gignac as the top scorer in Liga MX 2022.
The lethal French striker does form part of the top 10 top foreign scorers in Mexican soccer, but he is all the way down in this position.
