How many titles is USMNT to reach Mexico in Concacaf after winning the 2021 Gold Cup?

The United States is one of the three teams that dominate CONCACAF along with Mexico, regional powers that are forced to position themselves at the top of each competition. In the same sense, it is the second most winning team in the history of the Gold Cup, a tournament that today awards a financial prize to the champion and a distinction in name. 

The 2021 Gold Cup is already in the history books. Mexico and the United States played their seventh final against each other out of the 16 editions of the tournament, and as happened only in 2007, the United States defeated El Tri to become champions, despite not calling up most of the European players.

The CONCACAF tournament was played for the first time in 1963. The first 10 editions were played in a round-robin format, after which the champion was declared. In 1991, the format changed and was renamed the Gold Cup, and the champion was defined in a knockout and final format, which has been maintained to date.

With eight trophies, Mexico is the most winning team in the Gold Cup. It has participated in nine finals since 1991. The 2021 and 2007 editions were lost to the United States. Mexico has won seven of those finals against the United States and the other against Jamaica.
