Cristiano Ronaldo and Al Nassr are close to having a new important member in the club. The Athletic and Matteo Moretto reports that former Real Madrid player and assistant Fernando Hierro will be the new sporting director of Al Nassr. Hierro is a Real Madrid legend and has been rumored to take this job at Al Nassr even though he is the sporting director of Liga MX team Chivas de Guadalajara. Hierro is likely to move to Al Nassr due to a higher salary than he earns in Mexico and the project is more attractive since CR7 is there and he could build a great team around him.
The Spanish sporting director has been in charge of the Mexican club since 2022 after previously working as the sporting director of the Royal Spanish Football Federation [RFEF]. Hierro was also a coach of the Spanish national team for the FIFA World Cup 2018 in Russia, replacing Julen Lopetegui. It did not go well for him and the national team in that year's World Cup as they were eliminated in the Round of 16 by Russia after the game ended 1-1 after extra time, and the home side won 4-3 on penalties. Spain finished first in Group B, ahead of Portugal, Iran, and Morrocco, with five points, one win, and two draws.
Hierro with Chivas has not been what is expected from him, as the Mexican club has not made impactful signings. Hierro and Chivas did bring back Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez a few months ago but the Mexican striker has struggled to adapt after his recovery from a serious injury he suffered with his former club LA Galaxy. This 2024 Clausura season, Chivas are 6th in the table with 31 points after 17 games played. Chivas will play against Toluca over two legs in the Liguilla [Playoffs].
Fernando Hierro is considered one of the greatest players of all time in Real Madrid, as the former center-back won many titles with the club. With Real Madrid, Hierro won three Champions League titles, five Spanish league titles, one UEFA Super Cup, one Copa del Rey, six Spanish Super Cups, and four International Cups. For Real Madrid, Hierro made a total of 601 appearances in all competitions, scoring 127 goals and providing 33 assists.
