Julian Nagelsmann is the most expensive coach in history. With the 25 million paid by Bayern to RB Leipzig, he ousted André Villas-Boas from the top position, for whom Chelsea paid 15 million for the then Porto coach in 2011.

The funny thing is that this is not the first time Nagelsmann has moved money in the form of a transfer. RB Leipzig already shelled out 5 million in 2019 to Hoffenheim to secure his services.

On his shoulders weighs the fact that he became the youngest Bundesliga coach on his debut on February 11, 2016, with Hoffenheim. Since that major milestone, his achievements have spoken for themselves. With modern methods and effective tactics, Julian Nagelsmann has become one of the best coaches in the Bundesliga.

The youngest coach in the Bundesliga and the Champions League

He made his debut with Hoffenheim at the age of 28 years and six months in 2016. He is also the youngest coach to be in the Champions League: he made his debut with Leipzig in 2019, aged 31 years and 58 days. He is also the youngest to reach a Champions League semi-final when he did so with RB Leipzig. He also became the youngest coach in Bayern's history at the age of 34.

A serious knee injury cut short his career at an early age

In 2006, at the age of just 19, Nagelsmann's injury woes increased, leading to his premature retirement. "If I had continued playing at the age of 40, I would have had to wear an artificial knee," he says. The fact is that the Bayern coach believes he could have made a career as a professional footballer.

"I think I could have made it. I was confident of making it. If I evaluate it from a coaching perspective, I don't think I would have been a 'top' player, but I had enough talent to play professional soccer. I had so many injuries that at one point I realized there was no point in continuing. I had to decide if it made sense to continue beating my body and I made the decision that it didn't," he admitted in an interview with MARCA.

Tuchel opened the doors to the dugout for him

Let's go back to 2006. Nagelsmann is playing for the Augsburg youth team and Thomas Tuchel is his coach. As the Bayern Munich coach's career as a footballer is running out of steam due to injuries, the current Chelsea coach offers him a job as a scout.

"I was only Thomas Tuchel's player, nothing more. It's a subject that is getting too much hype. I was playing in the youth team, but I was carrying injuries from my time at 1860 Munich. At that point I had to make a choice: either I looked for another job to finance my university studies or I continued my involvement as a scout.

It wasn't a usual position in those leagues and Thomas was impressed. That was the first step in my career and I'm delighted. Then I had an offer to return to 1860 Munich as a coach, but Thomas had nothing to do with it. It was impossible to imagine that the two of us would meet in a Champions League semi-final," he admitted ahead of the Leipzig-PSG game that would decide who would go through to the final.

German U19 champion with Hoffenheim

The Bayern coach has just one title to his name so far. And it's not at the top level. Nagelsmann arrived at Hoffenheim to win the U19 Bundesliga in 2013-14. He did so after beating Hannover 5-0 in the final.

Currently, Bayern Munich ranks first in the Bundesliga standings with 52 points, 9 points above Borrusia Dortmund. The German coach is close to winning his first top-flight title if his team stays in the first position the remaining season.
