Manchester United today confirmed the appointment of Ralf Rangnick as the club's interim coach until the end of the season after which he would take up a role in the club's board as a consultant and football development.

Rangnick is highly respected in Germany due to his tactical prowess, invention but most importantly building of a club from an out of nothing situation into a top flight club in quick time as he had done with Ulm 1846 in 1999 and RB Leipzig.

His managerial statistics and titles won don't actually speak for the kind of reputation he has. He has a win percentage of 47.78 across the teams he has managed and has only won three titles with a top flight club but never won a top flight league title, statistics that are questionable for a manager highly respected.

He is credited for the invention of the high energy pressing system of football known as gegenpressing, a style that has been reinvented by new generation German coaches such as Jürgen Klopp, Thomas Tuchel and Julian Nagelsmann. He is a great mentor and football executive but not as great as a manager.
