Nashville SC's defense keeps shining and breaks an amazing record of the MSL

Last night’s draw against Minnesota United means that Gary Smith’s team has only conceded fourteen goals in fifteen games, surprising the previous expansion franchise record from Seattle Sounders FC. Goalkeeper Joe Willis has a lot to do with it.

Just 14 goals conceded in 15 matches. The number may not amaze, but it’s a record for an expansion team in the MLS. The previous one was set by Seattle Sounders back in 2009. Moreover, this defensive talent is putting Nashville SC in a playoffs spot, even though their scoring ability is quite bad. Gary Smith’s team owns a lot of respect to their goalie Joe Willis, who also leads the league in goalkeeper’s clean sheets.

Nashville’s moment in defense is all-around good. Only five times in the whole MLS has conceded less goals than them. They are Columbus Crew (10), Philadelphia Union (13), New York FC (12), New England Revolution (12) and Seattle Sounders FC (13). In fact, if Nashville would compite in the West Conference, it would be the second less scored team, just behind the Washingtonian franchise.

Head coach Gary Smith is proud of the team work put in keeping clean sheets, although he emphasize Nashville’s team isn’t training defensive strategies all day long.  In this sense the former Colorado Rapids understands that his team needs balance. They are just the second worst team at scoring, only followed by Cincinnati.

It is to be said that the Venezuelan striker Jhonder Cádiz had just arrived to Tennessee. It can be presume that he will make his official debut during the weekend, when Nashville visits Missouri to face Kansas City. Cádiz is coming from Liga NOS’s Benfica and hasn’t played a single game since march.
