Mohamed was sacked after becoming Liga MX champion.

After having a bye-week last weekend, when Repechaje was played, Club América is getting ready to face Club Puebla in the first leg of the quarterfinals of Clausura 2022, when they visit La Franja on Wednesday night in Estadio Cuauhtémoc.

Guillermo Ochoa wants to play for Real Madrid, but another team will make an offer impossible to refuse

Club América arrived at Liguilla with the best streak in Clausura 2022, as they finished the season with an 8-game streak without losing that was enough for them to leave the bottom of the table and install themselves in the top four teams of the season.

The good results that Las Águilas had arrived after Santiago Solari was sacked -he only managed to win one game in eight rounds, as well as three draws-, and Fernando “Tano” Ortíz was promoted to the first team, as he found a way of making them play as a team.

What “Tano” Ortíz did was to boost the strengths of the players instead of sticking to one formation, something that Solari never did. But the good results that Las Águilas are having so far, haven’t guaranteed his stay in América for Apertura 2022.

He could be sacked even if América wins the Liga MX title

Liga MX is a streak-based soccer league, as it doesn’t usually matter what you did through the first two thirds of the season, but how you finish the season, as the mood boost that a good streak gives the teams is all that is needed to transcend in Liguilla.

Las Águilas have the biggest probabilities of becoming Liga MX champions, although that hasn’t stopped Emilio Azcárraga and Santiago Baños from looking for potential replacements for Fernando Ortíz once the season is over, according to reports from Miguel Arizpe.

This wouldn’t be the first time that happens at Club América, as back in 2014, Las Águilas sacked Antonio Mohamed after they won their 12th Liga MX title, after just one year with “El Turco” Mohamed on the dugout.

Who will be Ortíz’s replacement?

Although they have been looking for candidates, Las Águilas management doesn’t have a clear candidate, although names like Juan Carlos Osorio, Ricardo Ferretti and even Nicolás Larcamón have been linked to Club América.
