Manchester United's search for a new manager continues to take another form with several managers linked and the recent name to pop up for the vacant Old Trafford dugout is former Barcelona manager Ernesto Valverde.

Ernesto Valverde had been without a job since he was sacked by Barcelona in January 2020. Valverde spent two and half seasons at Barcelona and won two La Liga titles and was top of the La Liga table when he was sacked in January and replaced with Quique Setien.

He took over in 2017, quitting Athletic Bilbao for Barcelona, he nearly ended his first season unbeaten but lost 5-4 to Levante close to the end of the season. He oversaw 145 games, won 97, drew 32 and lost 16 with a win percentage of 66.9%.

He won two La Liga titles, one Copa del Rey and one Spanish Super Cup but his Achilles heel was losing two consecutive Champions semifinals despite leading by a margin of three goals from the first leg against Roma and Liverpool. He was also criticised for not following the Barcelona tiki taka philosophy.
