Ahead of the start of the upcoming season, the NWSL 2021 continues to throw up surprises and one of them is the arrival of Sam Mewis to Kansas City Current

And it's no wonder Sam Mewis has switched teams, due to the fact that she is one of the most coveted players in the NWSL.

Last year alone, Mewis was awarded the U.S. Player of the Year award. "It's obviously a great honor to be part of the list of players who have won this award in the past," the player said in a statement issued by U.S. Soccer.

Sam Mewis' arrival at the Kansas City Current

Sam Mewis comes to Kansas from the North Carolina Courage, where he logged 307 minutes played, 1 goal and 1 assist.

North Carolina Courage is perhaps the great empire of the NWSL, their dominance is brutal and their reliability seems eternal, but make no mistake, nothing is eternal.

And much of this merit is thanks to the performance of Mewis. But for all his talent, the star was unable to prevent North Carolina's downfall in the first knockout round of the Challenge Cup.

Upon arriving at his new team, Sam Mewis stated:

“I feel already so welcome and am excited to be part of this club who it seems to me like everything is being done the right way and I’m just thrilled to be part of this team moving forward”.

Mewis' forcefulness and ambition has been reflected in his time in professional soccer.

He has virtually won championships at nearly every level of his career.

For example, he took home the USL W-League championship with the Pali Blues in 2013.

She also won an NCAA Championship with UCLA that same year. And later, he made three NWSL Championships of his own with the Western New York Flash and North Carolina Courage.

If that wasn't enough, he has won World Cup Championships with the USWNT.

Mewis, 29, joins Current after seven seasons with the Courage after capturing the NWSL Championship in 2016, 2018 and 2019.

A native of Hanson, Massachusetts, Mewis' talent exploded during the 2019 Women's World Cup, when her team defeated the Netherlands by a score of 2-0 in the final, played in Lyon, France.

The talented player made a name for herself at a young age in Hanson, where she attended Whitman-Hanson High School and played on its soccer team, totaling 77 goals and 34 assists.

Kansas City Current will be the seventh team in her career and according to her words, she is very excited to join her new club.

Kansas City Current wants to make its mark in the NWSL

After going 3-14-7 in its inaugural season, Kansas City Current announced its name change after playing as Kansas City NWSL.

And as its next plan, the institution plans to build a $70 million stadium specifically for women's soccer.

According to team owner Angie Long's plans, they are looking to establish the team as one of the largest in the NWSL.

And with Sam Mewis in their ranks, all indications are that they are close to achieving their goal.
