Mexican striker Javier Hernandez is one of the highest paid in the MLS, despite the controversies in which he has been involved throughout his career. Although the league is still far from being among the elite, MLS is one of the highest paid leagues in the American continent. The likes of Jozy Altidore, Chicharito Hernández, Xherdan Shaqiri and Gonzalo Higuaín, as well as Lorenzo Insigne and Mexico's Héctor Herrera in the summer, decided to join knowing the salaries and quality of life on offer.

However, an interesting trend has been the departure of established European players, as in recent years Wayne Rooney, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Bastian Schwensteiger, three references who also appeared on this list a few months ago, left the league.

MLS has decided to stabilize a greater number of teams, betting that each team will have franchise players (three) who can charge the highest salaries in the team. It will be up to each team to decide how to manage them and whether to go for an established player or a promising youngster who can make the jump to Europe.

The Swiss Xherdan Shaqiri, who joined the Chicago Fire in 2021 and earns an exuberant USD 8 million a year, tops the list. He is the one who places the first position in the absence of official disclosure or Lorenzo Insigne's salary with Toronto.

Lorenzo Insigne, a new signing from North American soccer and Toronto FC, is projected to become the highest paid player in the history of Major League Soccer (MLS), since, according to The Washington Post, he signed a contract for USD 12 million 500 thousand dollars per season.

Where there was a notable change was for Mexico's Carlos Vela, who in recent years was among the highest paid players, earning just over USD 6 million per season; however, with his latest renewal and the natural adjustment of his contract with LAFC, in 2022 he will now earn USD 4 million per season.

While Hernandez's time at Real Madrid seems to have been forgotten in time, the career he built at Manchester United is still often remembered by the fans. However, the salary he earned from the Premier League team was around 4.9 million dollars and at Real Madrid he was paid 3.5 million euros per season.

Currently, and despite the fact that he is no longer part of the Mexican National Team, the Jalisco-born player seems to be living the best moment of his career in the MLS, since it was revealed that he earns a net salary of 6 million dollars.

For some years now, the Mexican has been shining in the Los Angeles team and, although his arrival to Major League Soccer (MLS) seemed to be a decline in his career, the salary he perceives is higher than those he once earned at Real Madrid and Manchester United.
