Since Fernando “Tano” Ortíz took over Club América prior round nine of Clausura 2022, Las Águilas have become a different team from what they were with Santiago Solari on the dugout, as they finished the regular season with eight straight games without losing.
Club América: Pedro Aquino could leave Las Águilas for the next season
With the former Real Madrid coach, Las Águilas only won one out of eight games, added to the three draws that he had before he was sacked, he left Club América at the bottom of the table with only six points and without aspirations of making it to Repechaje.
But with the same roster, Fernando Ortíz turned things around and heroically made it into the top four thanks to the point obtained in the Clásico Joven and the defeat of Club Puebla against Mazatlán FC, maintaining his unbeaten streak.
América will now wait in quarterfinals to continue their odyssey, and according to reports, if they manage to make it into the semifinals, Fernando Ortíz will be able to remain in Las Águilas's dugout, although it’s yet to be seen if he wants to continue.
After losing the first game he coached in Liga MX, Ortíz has two draws and six victories in Mexico’s top flight, including the scoreless draw against Cruz Azul last Saturday. During his short stint, he’s earned 20 points out of the 27 points available.
But after the game against La Máquina, “El Tano” said that his condition as interim coach of Club América hasn’t changed and that he will discuss with Santiago Baños his continuity once Las Águilas’s participation in Clausura 2022 ends.
Ortíz said that if it was up to him, he’d remain in Club América’s dugout for a long time, as he has find a group that works well and thanks to them is why Las Águilas have managed to return successfully from the crisis from the start of the season.
Las Águilas will have a bye week after making it directly into Liguilla, where they will wait for either Club Puebla, Chivas, CF Monterrey or Cruz Azul, depending on the results that the teams standing from 5 to 8 gather in Repechaje.
