Fernando Ortíz is the interim coach for the remainder of the season.

Club América had their worst start in Liga MX in Clausura 2022, as they finished the first half of the season at the bottom of the table with just six points after eight rounds thanks to one victory and three draws that Santiago Solari earned.

But since Emilio Azcárraga and Santiago Baños decided to part ways with the former Real Madrid coach, Las Águilas became a completely different team with Fernando “Tano” Ortíz on the dugout, who was named interim coach after arriving at the start of the season to coach the U-20 team.

Although the Azulcremas lost the first game that Ortíz was on the sidelines, they have become one of the top contenders to win Liga MX this season, as they are closing the regular season with one of the strongest endings in Clausura 2022.

With Ortíz on the dugout, Las Águilas have tied one game and then have maintained a streak of six straight victories, and they are just one victory away from ensuring direct passage to Liguilla, as the have just one point less than Club Puebla and Atlas.

Will he remain as Las Águilas coach?

“El Tano” Ortíz was named interim coach, first until Club América found a new coach to replace Santiago Solari and then, due to the good performances that Las Águilas had, Emilio Azcárraga and Santiago Baños agreed to maintain him until the end of the season.

Names like Nicolás Larcamón, who is coaching Club Puebla, or Ricardo “Tuca” Ferretti, who will become a free agent at the end of the season, were linked to arrive at Club América, with the Camoteros coach being the top candidate.

But now that Ortíz has found a way to make the team play game after game at a high level, Santiago Baños has confirmed that he will remain in Las Águilas dugout for another season if they make it into the semifinals.

How much will he earn as Las Águilas coach?

According to reports, Fernando Ortíz has a salary of $800,000 per year, one that will remain the same if he keeps the coaching job with the first team, although he now will have the option to extend his contract with Las Águilas and ask for a well-deserved raise.
