Sometimes, selling the most expensive soccer player ever can be a huge problem instead of a good profit.

How can the highest transfer ever recorded in soccer history become a problem if a club is paid such an awful lot of millions? Well, after selling Neymar Jr to PSG, we can say that Barcelona incurred in a serious problem. Why? We’ll try to explain. Because in three years things have gone bad for the Spanish giants.

First, we must take the calculator. Neymar Jr was transferred from Barcelona to Paris Saint-Germain on August 3rd, 2017 for no less than €222 million. If we talk about US Dollars, then we must say they were $268.62 million. Yes, we told you it was an awful lot of millions. And he signed a contract until the end of 2021-2022 season.

Now, how can raising that money be a problem? Barcelona never won the UEFA Champions League again, for example, living the reign of Real Madrid, Liverpool and Bayern Munich. But also, the desperate need to replace the Brazilian star led them to buy as many players as they could.

From the start, in that season, after earning $268 million, the club spent $398. More than half of that was spent in Ousmane Dembelé and Philippe Coutinho, acquired for $127 and $145 million respectively. Yerry Mina, Nelson Semedo and Paulinho were bought for $14, $36 and $48 million respectively.
