The Tricolor are in third place in the standings with 22 points and with six points still to play for, Mexico has a good chance of winning one of the three direct tickets to the World Cup on Sunday, but it could also jeopardize its participation in the greatest event in world soccer.

Ahead of the match against Honduras, here are the different scenarios that could occur depending on the result Mexico obtains this Sunday on Honduran soil.

Scenarios if Mexico wins

If Mexico defeats Honduras at the Estadio Olimpico Metropolitano, it could earn a direct ticket to Qatar 2022 if Costa Rica draws or loses on Sunday against El Salvador.

If the Mexican national team beats the 'Catrachos', it would secure its place in the FIFA playoffs regardless of the results of the 'Ticos' and 'Canaleros' in the last two dates of the Octagonal. With a win against Honduras, Mexico would reach 25 points, a figure to which Panama, in fifth place in the standings, can no longer aspire.

If Mexico wins in Honduras, and the United States and Canada draw on Sunday against Panama and Jamaica, respectively, El Tri would go into the final round of qualifying with a chance of finishing first in the standings.

Scenarios if Mexico ties

If Mexico draws with La 'Bicolor' it would reach 23 points and could move up to second place in the Octagonal if the "Stars and Stripes" lose against Panama at Orlando City Stadium.

A draw in Honduras would allow Mexico to retain its current third place in the standings. The Aztecs would go into the final round depending on themselves to win a direct ticket to Qatar 2022, regardless of Costa Rica and Panama winning their respective matches.

If the Mexican National Team draws with the 'Catrachos', 'Tata' Martino's team could secure its place in the playoffs if Panama loses to the United States. The 'Canaleros' would reach the last matchday with 18 points and it would be mathematically impossible for them to catch Mexico.

Scenarios if Mexico loses

If they lose to Honduras and Costa Rica beats El Salvador, the 'Ticos' would catch up with Mexico with 22 points. However, for Costa Rica to take third place from the Aztecs, they would need to score five goals against La Selecta.

If Mexico loses to La 'Bicolor', Martino's team would jeopardize its place in the playoffs if Panama wins in Orlando on Sunday. On the other hand, if the 'Canaleros' lose, El Tri would qualify for the playoffs.

If the Aztec team is defeated by Los 'Catrachos, and Costa Rica and Panama win their respective matches, Mexico, despite the loss, would reach the final round depending on itself to qualify for the World Cup.
