After an irregular closure of the season, Cruz Azul lost the opportunity of making it directly into Liguilla and instead fell to the eighth place in Liga MX standings, forcing them to play against Club Necaxa in Repechaje to know who will be playing in the quarterfinals.

The reason why ‘Chuy’ Corona hasn’t returned to his starting role in Cruz Azul

Cruz Azul arrived at the last game of the season with possibilities of avoiding Repechaje thanks to the 13 points that they earned in the first six games of the season, points that helped them finish Clausura 2022 with 25 points.

But the team came to less with the pass of the games, as they only won one of their last 10 games, against Atlas in Estadio Azteca, something that got them eliminated from the CONCACAF Champions League by Pumas in the semifinals.

Now if Juan Reynoso and Cruz Azul want to save the season, they will have to beat Club Necaxa to reach the quarterfinals, although they lost against Los Rayos in the regular season, as Necaxa won 2-1 on their visit to Estadio Azteca.

What did Reynoso think of their Repechaje rival?

Reynoso knows that the only way he can save his job and fulfill his contract, which ends in December, is if they become protagonists in Liguilla, something that looks difficult, not only for the poor performances they’ve had lately, but also because Necaxa is on the rise.

The team coached by Jaime Lozano won three of their last games and finished the season just two points below La Máquina but became one of the teams with the best streak in the last part of Clausura 2022.

Given that Repechaje is just one game on direct elimination, Reynoso will have to plan a good strategy to defeat one of the teams that has become a surprise in recent weeks, something that he hasn’t been able to do in recent weeks.

The candidates to replace Reynoso

If La Máquina don’t make it into Liguilla, Jaime Ordiales, sporting director of Cruz Azul, already has a few candidates to replace the Peruvian coach. Amongst the prospects, Nicolás Larcamón, Diego Cocca and Hernán Cristante are the ones that stand out the most.
