It has been one year since Veljko Paunovic sat on a substitution bench for the last time. The Serbian coach had retired from his profession in a unexpected move when he was fired from Chicago Fire FC by November last year. In spite of his distancing from soccer, Reading FC made its bet and finally contracted him.

After a 17-year experience as a soccer player where he ended his career at Philadelphia Union, Paunovic started his short experience as a coach in the youth Serbian national teams and had successful results. After heading the U18 and U19 teams, he won the FIFA World Cup with the U20 team. This was a direct springboard to MLS were he arrived at Chicago Fire. But his results weren't good enough. He only reached playoffs once in four years and finally he was dismissed.

Almost one year later, a new opportunity came to Pauno who will also have a different amount of money to build his team. Reading FC, which militates in the English Premiership, the first promotion league in the European Country, has about four times the budget he had at Chicago Fire. But still, his absence in last year is a risk as he will start working without a secure continuity.
