Ronald Koeman's borrowed time at Barcelona finally ran out after another defeat to Rayo Vallecano and it was the last straw that broke the camel's back as he was eventually sacked by the club after weeks of pressure, media speculations and even a vote of confidence by Laporta.

Sacking a coach mid season and getting a top one is not going to be an easy task though could be made easier by Barcelona's appeal, but considering the current situation of the club, many managers would want to avoid being caught up in the mess like Ronald Koeman did.

Former player Xavi Hernandez is the priority for the job and was touted for the job last year but was unwilling to accept the job mid season before Koeman turned things around. Things however got worse this season and the situation remains the same and it remains to be seen if Xavi will honour his former club.

The other managers on the shortlist are River Plate manager Marcelo Gallardo and Barca B’s head coach Sergi Barjuan as an interim appointment, in similar way to how Pep Guardiola was hired in 2008 by the same President Joan Laporta.
