Matías Almeyda is one of the coaches that is followed closely by Palmeiras front office to take the lead after they have removed Vanderlei Luxemburgo from his role a month ago. The coach would be pleased to accept if he doesn't make it to the playoffs with San José Earthquakes.

Non-the-less, this weekend came with many good news for Almeyda. Many of the teams that are competing with San José for a playoffs spot have lost and are now without chances of making it to the playoffs. In addition, San José is still in playoffs spots, so they depend just from themselves to avance.

Houston Dynamo and Real Salt Lake City are officially out of the race for the last playoff spot. The Dynamo lost 3-0 to FC Dallas, while Real Salt Lake City was beat 2-1 by Los Angeles Galaxy. Moreover, the Vancouver Whitecaps lost 1-0 to Portland Timbers.

The only direct rival of San José that won is Colorado Rapids, which beat Seattle Sounders 3-1. There are only four teams remaining in the fight for two playoff spots: the Rapids have an average of 1.38 points per game while the Quakes have 1.29 ppt, the Whitecaps 1.09 and the Galaxy 1.05. In addition, Galaxy and Whitecaps while face each other, which means that one of those teams won't get the necessary points to qualify. Moreover, if the tie San José and Colorado qualify to playoffs directly.
