While he was Barnsley’s head coach, Gerhard Struber received with joy the news about Minamino’s signing with Liverpool. The Austrian coach used to train the Japanese star in Salzburg and was convinced about his potencial. Now in New York, Struber’s style of play can find perfect interpretation in the Paraguayan-Argentinian midflier Alejandro Romero Gamarra.

“Kaku” has changed his style since his arrival at Harrison. He’s now less a winger than a playmaker. Minamino’s transformation was quite similar: he started as a revulsive winger and later on turned into the RB Salzburg attacking center-piece. Finally, he moved to Liverpool, a team characterized by wingers whose job is to assist.

Romero Gamarra and Minamino are also similar in age. Minamino’s acquisition by Liverpool came when the Japanese forward was 24. Romero Gamarra is 25. With a positive season he can make his way into Europe, if that’s his desire. Miguel Almirón, for instance, was bought by Newcastle at the same age.

New York Red Bulls’s squad is young. In that perspective, Romero Gamarra is a kind of leader for the team. Considering Struber’s experience guiding young teams, a successful season for the Harrison side must mean a great display by Romero Gamarra.
