It was something that was known to happen, but clearly not in the way it happened. It's that Gennaro Gattuso will no longer be the coach of Napoli after drawing 1-1 at home against Hellas Verona on the last date of Serie A and finishing out of the Champions League classification for next season by finishing in the fifth placement. The curious and striking thing about this has to do with the way in which the coach found out that he will not continue at the southern Italian club.

The president of Napoli, Aurelio De Laurentiis, surprised on his social networks by making official this Sunday, less than an hour after the match, the decision to cut the link with the first team coach: "Dear 'Rino', I'm happy for having spent almost two seasons with you. In thanking you for the work you have done, I wish you success wherever you go. A hug also to your wife and children".

Twelve minutes later, the very club in which Mexican striker Hirving Lozano plays published a brief message on his official network: "Thank you Mister!", accompanied by a photo of Gattuso.

The 43-year-old coach with a past at Sion in Switzerland, Palermo in Italy, OFI Crete in Greece, Pisa in Italy and Milan came to the fore of the Neapolitan team in December 2019 to replace Carlo Ancelotti in technical direction. Since then, he has led 81 games with a total of 47 wins, 12 draws and 22 losses.

Last season he finished in seventh place and this season he re-qualified for the Europa League for the second year in a row after finishing in fifth place with 77 points.
