Former Barcelona captain and current manager Xavi Hernandez began his tenure as Barcelona manager with a derby win over Espanyol which Barcelona won 1-0 thanks to a Memphis Depay spot kick.

His biggest test so far is the UEFA Champions League match day five game against Portuguese opponent SL Benfica. The match is a must win as it will decide Barcelona's fate of progression to the next round of the Champions League. Barcelona have six points from four games, two points ahead of Benfica.

A win against Benfica puts them in a safe zone when they play Bayern Munich at Allianz Arena while a draw means they must face an uphill task of beating Bayern Munich at home. A draw makes the situation even more open but a win is the best bet.

Xavi's first match was far from convincing though he got the most needed result, a win. There were glimpses of his philosophy in the way Barcelona play. Xavi will have to instill more into his team for tonight's match as Barcelona cannot afford to miss out on progression to the next round.
