The Gold Cup is Concacaf's most important tournament. In it, the teams from North America, Central America, and the Caribbean compete to define which country has the best soccer. It is a championship with a lot of history behind it that captures the attention of fans in the upper part of the continent.
Since its inception, the Gold Cup has been responsible for hosting multiple national teams. With the United States and Mexico as the great dominators.
In 1990, the confederation of North, Central America, and the Caribbean sought a new alternative to the old CONCACAF Nations Championship with fixed venues, so they introduced the Gold Cup, which since its first edition in 1991 has been hosted by the American Union.
Despite the fact that the United States has shared the venue in four editions, the North American country has received all the Gold Cups as a host, due to the fact that since its presentation, CONCACAF was looking for a fixed venue, which it found in the country of the Stars and Stripes, where the cultures of the participating teams can also mix.
Logistical and economic issues, as well as the great variety of stadiums to host the matches, have made the United States the main venue for the Gold Cup in its history, in addition to being a country with a population from practically all the countries that usually participate, something that guarantees the presence of fans in the stands.
On only four occasions has the United States 'shared' the Gold Cup, since in the 1993 edition, Mexico joined the tournament's venues, even hosting the final phase, so that ten years later, in the 2003 edition, the United States and Mexico were the tournament's co-hosts, which once again was held at the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City.
Meanwhile, for the 2015 edition, the Gold Cup was once again binational, as Canada joined as host, while for 2019, Costa Rica and Jamaica hosted first-round matches before the final round moved to North America.
Although further details are not yet known, it is expected that as has happened in the last 30 years, the Gold Cup will be played in 2023 in the United States, an edition in which Qatar will be the guest again and which has been speculated could be the last edition of the Gold Cup, as various reports indicate that CONCACAF is considering modifying the format of its most important tournament.
