It’s no lie to say that Marcelo is one of the best defenders in the world and has been for almost two decades, but his career is slowly coming to an end and Real Madrid will need a player that could replace him in the back field for the next decade or so.

Although they have Ferland Mendy, the addition of a much younger player that can replace either Marcelo or Dani Carvajal should be appealing to Carlo Ancelotti and Florentino Pérez, who are slowly trying to build the roster for the future.

That’s where Xabi Alonso could help. Even though the Spain former international currently coaches Real Sociedad B, his past as a Real Madrid player could be the only link needed to help their former team to find that player, as he knows of the conditions of Jonathan Gómez.

Who is Jonathan Gómez?

The 18-year-old was born in Texas on a Mexican household, which is why he has both Mexican and American citizenships. The young right-back started his career in FC Dallas academy, where he played from 2016 until 2020, when he became a free agent.

He then joined Louisville City FC from USL championship and the academy team of Orlando City SC, where he played for two seasons until he arrived in Real Sociedad during the past winter transfer window.

Can he play for Mexico National Team?

Jonathan Goméz has said that it’s an honor that both USMNT and Mexico National Teams are interested in him, and he has even been part of both academy teams, as he played with El Tri U-16 and U-20 squads and for the Bars and Stripes with the U-16 and U-17 squads.

He’s said that he won’t rush to decide for which National Team he wants to play, although he already was part of a friendly match with US Soccer MNT against Bosnia and Herzegovina the past December. He still can play in El Tri as he has yet to play either three friendly matches or one official match.
