Santiago Muñoz is finally showing why he’s the striker Mexico National Team needs

Since 2010, when “Chicharito” left Chivas and Liga MX to play for Manchester United, he’s signed millionaire deals, and for a while he was one of the players from Mexico National Team that was in every single add of the biggest El Tri sponsors.

But his fame was rightfully earned, as he’s been a top scorer for every team he’s played for. With Manchester United, “Chicharito” scored 59 goals in 157 games. With Chivas, he scored 29 goals on 79 matches and was Liga MX golden boot in 2010.

With Los Angeles Galaxy, his current team, he had a hard time during the first season, as he only was able to score two goals in 12 matches, but for the 2021 MLS Season, Hernández scored 17 goals in 21 games, and he also assisted on 4 occasions.

With Mexico National Team things aren’t that different, as he’s played a total of 109 games wearing El Tri colors since debuting in 2009. In that span of time, he’s scored 52 goals and assisted 13 times, numbers that have placed him as the highest scorer in El Tri’s history.

Why hasn’t he been part of El Tri lately?

His last appearance with Mexico National Team was on 2019, on a friendly match against USMNT were he scored one goal on the 3-0 victory over the Bars and Stripes. After that, he was erased from any other calls from Gerardo Martino.

Rumors suggested that he was involved in a discussion with Andrés Guardado, El Tri captain and one of the most respected players that Mexico National Team currently has, which led to his veto, as Guardado was first on Martino’s list.

But recently, Guardado spoke about those rumors, denying them, as he said that they’re not friends but good acquaintances, and when both lived in Sevilla, they used to hang out together from time to time. Guardado also said that they have never been involved in a fight.

What’s the reason of his veto according to Guardado?

Guardado said that the reason of his veto from El Tri has more to do with a discussion “Chicharito” had with FMF and other players in El Tri, like Guillermo Ochoa, as he questioned the way some players didn’t earn money from the use of their image for publicity.

“El Principito” said that, back then, he agreed with Hernández’s claims, although he didn’t agree with the way he demanded them, as he is a player that tries to be more politically correct and “Chicharito” has a more explosive personality.
