Mexico National Team has struggled in recent months to find a striker that can find the net, as neither Rogelio Funes Morio nor Henry Martín have showed why Gerardo “Tata” Martino has considered them to be part of his roster.

Gerardo Martino already knows who will he call for Qatar 2022

And even Raúl Jiménez, who has proved to be the best active forward that El Tri currently has, has been able to score any other way that is not from the penalty mark. That’s why “Tata” Martino is still considering giving Javier “Chicharito” Hernández the chance of returning to the Aztec squad.

But Martino knows that “Chicharito” won’t change the lifestyle that has gotten him into the scandals that now have him vetoed from Mexico National Team, which is why he’s still considering other options before giving in and calling the LA Galaxy striker.

Names like Santiago Giménez, Julio Furch and even José Juan Macías are on the radar of El Tri’s coach, although the only of the group that is on shape to be part of the Aztec squad is Furch, who has yet to be called as he was waiting to get his Mexican citizenship.

But Martino can have another option to be that striker that Mexico National Team desperately needs, as Santiago Muñoz finally made his first appearances with Newcastle U-23 squad and already scored his first goal wearing the Magpies colors.

Who is Santiago Muñoz?

Born in El Paso, Texas, on a Mexican household, Santiago Muñoz is one of the most promising forwards that Mexico has. Although he holds both American and Mexican citizenships, Muñoz has said in the past that his wish is to play for El Tri, and he’s been part of the academy teams since joining the U-17 squad until now, that he’s part of the U-23 team.

Muñoz debuted with Santos Laguna in 2020, although he became a regular until Clausura 2021, where he became one of the top prospects in Liga MX and after just one season with Santos, where he played 18 games and scored three times, he joined Newcastle United on an 18-month long with option to buy.

He joined the Magpies for the start of the 2021-22 season, although his debut with their U-23 academy team had to be postponed given that he was injured and then tested positive for covid. Since January, he’s trained several times with the senior squad and has played two matches with the U-23 squad, where he already scored his first goal on a penalty shootout that placed the Magpies in the final of the Northumberland Senior Cup.
