There’s no doubt that Carlos Acevedo is the Mexican goalkeeper with most potential in Liga MX, as he already earned the captain’s badge with Santos Laguna with just 25 years and after two seasons of outstanding performances.
Gerardo Martino's decision of calling Carlos Acevedo to Mexico National Team
Although Santos is not going through a good moment, Acevedo has been the most reliable player Los Guerreros have had on the pitch, and his performance against Cruz Azul last weekend, where he stopped four shots in less that 20 seconds, including a penalty kick from Uriel Antuna, was the motivation that Santos needed to finally win their first game of the season.
It’s still impossible to understand how Gerardo “Tata” Martino is not considering him to be part of Mexico National Team, as he’s had just one game wearing El Tri colors, although he has yet to debut in an official match.
But Martino knows of his talent and, and even if he’s not currently considering him to be part of the roster for the upcoming FIFA match window, if any of the goalkeepers that Martino has in El Tri’s squad gets injured, Acevedo will be the player that replaces him.
Everything points toward a departure in the next couple of transfer windows, as he already was linked to Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen during the winter transfer window, even though the German club denied the rumors.
For now, at least two European clubs can acquire the 25-year-old goalkeeper, especially since they have a good relationship with Mexican soccer. Porto FC is going to need a new goalkeeper as Agustín Marchesín will finish his contract at the end of the season. The other team is Eredivisie side PSV Eindhoven, as they are known for liking the Mexican talent.
Acevedo has been part of Santos Laguna since a young age, as he was part of their academy teams his whole career. He officially debuted with Los Guerreros in 2016, although he gained regularity until 2020. Carlos Acevedo is under contract until 2025, which is why any team that wants to sign him will have to pay $5.5 million, his current market value.
Guillermo Ochoa is the one blocking Carlos Acevedo’s arrival in Mexico National Team
