Guillermo Ochoa has been the starter goalkeeper for Mexico National Team since he won the race against José de Jesús Corona prior the 2014 FIFA World Cup, and since then no other goalkeeper has been able to sit Ochoa.

Although he was the first Mexican goalkeeper to play in a European league, his best moments under the three posts are far gone, as he now, with Club América, is usually involved in mistakes, something that repeats when he’s wearing El Tri colors.

Now, in Liga MX, Carlos Acevedo keeps showing why he’s one of the best goalkeepers in Mexico’s top flight, as he’s hand in hand with goalkeepers like Antony Silva or Camilo Vargas. Although his team, Santos Laguna isn’t doing good, he has been vital to earning the few points Santos currently have.

According to sports journalist Enrique Bermúdez, Acevedo’s eccentric way of saving his net and the leadership he has on the pitch, even at 25 he’s Santos’ captain, are two of the qualities that have earned him the right to be called to El Tri.

Why hasn’t Martino given him the chance?

But even knowing that, Gerardo “Tata” Martino has refused to take Guillermo Ochoa off from the starting XI, as Ochoa not only has become one of El Tri leaders on the dressing room, but also because he’s protected by the Mexican Football Federation, as he’s one of the most profitable players Mexico has.

Gerardo Martino is also keen on the idea of having Ochoa as his goalkeeper, as he helps control the team from inside the pitch. If it wasn’t enough, Ochoa is an investor of Kavak, one of the main sponsors of El Tri for the next World Cup, which is why he already has his place in Qatar 2022 secured.

Will Martino call Acevedo for Qatar 2022?

Martino knows of his abilities and has said he’s a talented goalkeeper but has given Acevedo only one chance to prove himself as El Tri’s goalkeeper in a friendly match, where he only called young players that aren’t usually on his roster. Said match ended in a 2-2 draw against a Chile National Team side b.

For now, the only way in which Carlos Acevedo could have a place for the upcoming 2022 FIFA World Cup is if one of the three goalkeepers that Martino is considering to be part of his roster gets injured or dramatically drops his performance.
