Gerardo Martino's decision of calling Carlos Acevedo to Mexico National Team

Gerardo “Tata” Martino is still considering Guillermo Ochoa to be the starting goalkeeper for Mexico National Team for the remainder of the CONCACAF Qualifiers and until the 2022 FIFA World Cup ends, as he hasn’t moved Ochoa since his arrival in El Tri’s dugout.

His decision hasn’t changed even if the performances of other Mexican goalkeepers have been outstanding, and Ochoa is often involved in the mistakes that have Club América in their current standing in Clausura 2022, at the bottom of the table.

But after Ochoa, nothing has been decided yet, as Martino has had four different goalkeepers during his cycle, including Alfredo Talavera, Rodolfo Cota, Jonathan Orozco, and Carlos Acevedo, although Acevedo has been part for only one game.

But given his current performances with Santos Laguna, Martino should be considering calling Carlos Acevedo at least as the third goalkeeper, given that FIFA only allows National Teams to have three goalkeepers on their roster.

Will Martino give another opportunity?

After the upcoming FIFA match window, it will be decided which are the teams that are going to represent CONCACAF in the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Canada MNT has already secured their place in Qatar, and USMNT and El Tri are close to having their ticket, either as second or third standing in CONCACAF.

Martino won’t give Acevedo the opportunity of being part of the roster that faces USMNT, Honduras and El Salvador, as he’s going to stick to the players he already knows and that have been part of most of his cycle. “Tata” knows of the talent that Acevedo has, and he even has said he’s part of a future process, but for now, he has three goalkeepers up in front of him on his list to Qatar.

But in the games that will come in the next few months, Martino might give players like Acevedo the chance to prove themselves, and he might even consider him to be a last-minute call if any of the goalkeepers on El Tri get injured or dramatically diminish their performances.
