Even if Gerardo “Tata” Martino still under contract with Mexico National Team and Mexican Football Federation, and rumors are pointing towards a potential renovation for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the truth is that he hasn’t secured his stay in El Tri for Qatar 2022.

The Aztec squad will face USMNT in the upcoming CONCACAF Qualifiers match window in what will be the decisive game for both El Tri and the Bars and Stripes, as the winner of that encounter will secure their ticket to Qatar 2022, while the other team might have to be part of a playoff game before knowing if they’ll be able to be part of the World Cup.

If that wasn’t enough, a defeat for Mexico National Team, which would be the fourth straight against USMNT- could also mean the end of Martino’s era as El Tri coach, which is why in FMF they’re already looking for potential replacements.

One of the names that has been linked to El Tri is the one of Nicolás Larcamón, Club Puebla’s coach, who has helped La Franja to leave the bottom of the table, a place they were used to, and become real contenders for Liga MX title.

Will Larcamón arrive in El Tri?

When the 37-year-old Argentine coach was asked about the possibility, he answered that it would be a dream come true to coach a national team like Mexico, as they’re usually contending for titles, although he knows it’s not the moment for him to arrive, as he’s compromised with Club Puebla.

He’s under contract with La Franja until the end of the year, although he could leave Los Camoteros over the summer, as his name has also been linked to Club América, who don’t have a coach after Santiago Solari was sacked last week.

What is FMF asking him to be considered?

During an interview with Univisión, Yon de Luisa said that one of the requirements they have when looking for a coach is that they have titles, something that Larcamón has yet to accomplish, as the closest he’s been to a title was in Venezuelan league, when Deportivo Anzotaegui reached the final in 2016.

In FMF they are considering Larcamón as a possible replacement for Gerardo Martino once the current cycle is over, which gives Larcamón the chance of winning a Liga MX title, something he could do this same season with Club Puebla, as they are leaders of Clausura 2022 and the only unbeaten team.
