When Orbelín Pineda decided to leave Cruz Azul and Liga MX to follow the European dream, he didn’t imagine it would be a nightmare, as Eduardo “Chacho” Coudet hasn’t given him the chance of proving why Liga MX was no longer a challenge for him.

When he first arrived in Celta de Vigo, he was received by Carlos Mouriño, president of the Celtistas, as he was the one that wanted to have Pineda on the team, given the success that he had when Néstor Araujo joined them, back in 2018.

But after a few games had passed and he hadn’t debuted yet, “Chacho” Coudet was asked about his absence, to which he replied that he had to adapt first to La Liga, given that he was out of shape as he had more than two months without activity.

Coudet also mentioned that Pineda’s arrival was thanks to Mouriño and that he didn’t request him even if he knew him from his stint in Liga MX, a clear sign that Orbelín was not going to be taken in consideration by “Chacho”, something that’s turned to be true, as he’s played in just one game.

What will happen to Orbelín?

Since Pineda arrived in La Liga, Celta de Vigo has played eight games. For one of them, he wasn’t part of the roster that Coudet called, in six more, he had to watch the game from the bench, and in the last one, he played a total of 28 minutes.

If things continue this way, Orbelín will have the same fate as Diego Lainez, who hasn’t established himself in Real Betis, where he has given samples of his talent but doesn’t seem to be able to maintain regularity.

For now, the option for Orbelín is, once the 2021-22 season is over, looking for a loan to another La Liga team in which he can have more playing time and gain regularity, as the World Cup is getting closer and if he’s out of shape, Gerardo “Tata” Martino will hardly call him.

Where can he play next season?

Although he arrived as a free agent, in Celta de Vigo don’t want to lose the investment they did when they acquired the 25-year-old left-winger, as his current market value is set at $10 million but it might drop if he doesn’t have regular activity.

Celta de Vigo is considering sending him on a loan for the 2022-23 La Liga Season, either to a team from the bottom part of the table, like Granada FC or RCD Mallorca. Another option is to loan him to a Liga MX team, where he’ll have the wanted regularity.
