Even if Santos Laguna couldn’t beat Chivas on their visit to Estadio Akron, Carlos Acevedo remains as one of the best goalkeepers in Liga MX, as he’s one of the most constant players of Los Guerreros and has helped them to avoid receiving more goals.

So far, Acevedo has played the full nine games of Clausura 2022, as well as the two games in which Santos played in CONCACAF Champions League, although they were eliminated in the round of 16 by CF Montréal.

He’s also managed to keep two clean sheets, although given the weak defense that Santos had during the first games of Clausura 2022, he has received a total of 20 goals in 11 official games played this season.

But not even his outstanding performances with Santos Laguna have earned him the opportunity of being called by Gerardo “Tata” Martino to Mexico National Team, as the Argentine coach considers that there’s at least three goalkeepers more suitable for El Tri than Acevedo, although that might change if one of them decides to retire.

Which goalkeeper is thinking of stepping down from El Tri?

It’s known that Gerardo Martino doesn’t like to call young players, as he believes that they don’t have the experience needed to be part of his squad, which is why he hasn’t given Acevedo the opportunity to play in an official match.

Even if he has been considered by Martino in most of the games that Mexico National Team has played, Alfredo Talavera knows that he won’t have a chance to beat Guillermo Ochoa for the starting role and that his place in El Tri could be of more use to other goalkeeper, like Carlos Acevedo.

Talavera's numbers with Pumas

Talavera is playing one of his lasts seasons as a professional player, given that he’s 39 years old, although since he left Toluca in 2020, he has regained the reliability he had for a long time. So far, he’s played 56 games for Pumas, in which he’s received 50 goals and has kept 21 clean sheets.

In Clausura 2022, Talavera has played eight games, in which he has received eight goals but has been able to keep three clean sheets, much better numbers than what both Guillermo Ochoa and Carlos Acevedo have.
