Yesterday, Gerardo “Tata” Martino revealed the list of players that will be part of Mexico National Team for the last CONCACAF Qualifiers match window, where one of the biggest surprises was the fact that he called four goalkeepers and 11 defenders.

Gerardo Martino keeps refusing to give Marcelo Flores a chance in Mexico National Team

Although Gerardo “Tata” Martino finally left some of the worst players that were regulars on his roster for the past games that Mexico National Team has faced, he didn’t clean the full roster, as players like Héctor Moreno and Jesús Gallardo are still part of El Tri.

The CF Monterrey defenders have been far from the bare minimum needed to wear El Tri colors, but Martino refuses to leave them out of the Aztec squad, and by doing so he’s closing the doors to players that are having a much better season than them.

Players like Alan Mozo and Erik Lira have become some of the best Mexican players in Liga MX in Clausura 2022, but it feels like Martino is refusing to start the generational change needed not only for 2022 but for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Who are the players that deserved to be in El Tri?

Although the list is long, some of the players that stand out the most are Alan Mozo and Erik Lira, as previously stated, as they’ve become essential players for their respective teams, not only for the current season but they’ve been playing at a high level for a while now.

Another of the big absentees in Martino’s roster is Salvador Reyes, as even if Club América is having one of their worst seasons in a long time, the 23-year-old left-back has been the most consistent player for Las Águilas, a level he’s keep since playing for Club Puebla.

The absence of Carlos Acevedo is the one that stands out the most, especially after the Argentine coach decided to call four goalkeepers, including Rodolfo Cota and Jonathan Orozco, who are far from their best shape, contrary to Acevedo, as the Santos Laguna goalkeeper has saved his team in multiple times.

Last but not least, Marcelo Flores is another player that could have been useful for Mexico National Team, especially against the Bars and Stripes, given his young age and ability to reach the box in almost every play, as he could be a menace against any of the three USMNT goalkeepers that Gregg Berhalter called.

The players that should not be in El Tri

It’s hard to understand why Gerardo Martino keeps considering players like Héctor Moreno, Jesús Gallardo, Rodolfo Cota, Henry Martín and even Rodolfo Pizarro, who is a novelty in the roster, even if he has had just two good games so far in 2022.
