Now that Mexico National Team knows who are the rivals that they’re going to face in the group stage of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, Gerardo “Tata” Martino will have eight months to build the best possible squad according to the teams they will meet in Qatar.

Is the debut coming? Marcelo Flores was called up to Arsenal's first team

The Aztec squad will start their participation on November 22, one day after the inaugural game, playing against Poland on a game that most likely will define the second place of the group, supposing that Argentina finishes as leader of Group C.

Then, El Tri will face La Albiceleste and will close the group stage playing against Saudi Arabia, the game that seems more winnable, although if they don’t manage to earn at least three points in the previous matches, it could be the last game they play in the World Cup.

If Martino wants to avoid that, he will have to make several movements in the current roster and given that FIFA will increase the roster spots up to 26, El Tri will have three more spots where “Tata” could fully embrace the much-needed generational change, and he could even include the most promising player El Tri currently has.

Will Marcelo Flores make it to Qatar?

So far, Gerardo Martino has refused to call Marcelo Flores for an official game of El Tri, as Flores has played just one friendly game, against Chile, where he jumped on the pitch with less than 10 minutes on the clock.

It’s yet to be seen of Martino will consider him to be part of the final roster, although he could use the friendly games that El Tri plays in the United States to give him more playing time with the senior squad to see how well he integrates with the group.

Flores still has eight more months to impress Martino, not only to finally show what he’s capable of at a senior level, but also to fulfill one of his goals for 2022, as he recently stated during an interview with Goal that he wants to play in Qatar 2022 with El Tri.

He’s just one step away from fulfilling his first goal of the year

During the same interview, Flores also said that his other goal for 2022 was to debut with Arsenal senior squad before turning 19, something he’s just one step away from fulfilling, as Mikel Arteta gave him his first call-up of the season for the match against Crystal Palace.
