Mexico National Team has six months to prepare for their debut in the 2022 FIFA World Cup, when they face Poland on November 20, as they need to improve the level showed during the CONCACAF Qualifiers if they want to have a worthy participation.

Mexico National Team beats USMNT on the addition of a new Dual Nat

Even if the Aztec squad managed to finish second in the Qualifying stage, tied in points with Canada, the results that helped them earn their ticket for Qatar 2022 were against the weakest teams of the competition, as they couldn’t beat USMNT nor Canada MNT.

The lack of a good attack is something that hurt El Tri’s aspirations of establishing conditions against the strongest rivals, as well as the irregularities that Gerardo “Tata” Martino’s favorite midfielders had, given that neither Andrés Guardado nor Héctor Herrera were able to gain and maintain possession.

The Mexican national team will face five games in the upcoming month, where Martino will have to find a way to solve the problems showed in the past year, as well as define most of the players that he’ll take to Qatar, with Héctor Herrera being one of the biggest concerns for Martino.

Herrera could lose his place after leaving La Liga

One of the things that Martino will have to think about is the continuity of Herrera in El Tri, as he decided to leave La Liga to join MLS side Houston Dynamo just months before the World Cup, a decision that could diminish his level hence the level of El Tri.

He could lose his position in El Tri now that a new Mexican American player wants to represent Mexico instead of the Stars and Stripes, as Primeira Liga side FC Vizela’s midfielder Alex Mendez has decided to play for El Tri, according to reports from Jóvenes Futbolistas MX.

The 21-year-old midfielder was formed in the US Youth National Team, but given that he holds the Mexican nationality too, FMF convinced him to play for El Tri, as at his young age he has become a regular player for Vizela and could improve the Mexican roster.

Will Martino consider him?

Méndez has been followed closely by FMF for a while and given the good roster that El Tri will have for the 2026 World Cup, full of young, talented players, he decided to play for El Tri instead, although it’s improbable that Martino will consider him for Qatar 2022, unless one of the starting midfielders gets injured.
