One of the things that Mexico National Team has to do, not only in the upcoming months, but also once the 2022 FIFA World Cup is over, is to increase the number of young players in the roster, as they played with mainly experienced players during the CONCACAF Qualifiers.

Gerardo Martino is considering a new naturalized striker for Mexico National Team

The lack of younger players has made the Aztec squad a slow team, something that was evident especially in the games against USMNT and Canada MNT, as El Tri couldn’t compete against them, losing on their visits to Cincinnati and Edmonton.

That’s one thing that Gerardo “Tata” Martino has started to change, as the Argentine coach called up a roster full of youngsters for the friendly game against Guatemala that they had on April, where the apparition of players like David Ochoa and Jonathan Gómez stood out.

And now that the Mexican national team has revealed the 36-men preliminary list that will play three friendly games over the summer, as well as two games from the CONCACAF Nations League, Martino included 11 U-23 players.

Dual Nats, the key to El Tri’s success in the future

It’s clear that at least in the academy categories, MLS has left behind Liga MX, as the European structure that they have has helped boost the careers of dozens of players to move to Europe at a young age, something that Mexican soccer can only dream of doing.

Amongst those players, the ones with dual citizenships have become the target of both Mexico MNT and USMNT, with some of them choosing to play for El Tri and others for the Stars and Stripes. And according to reports from Jóvenes Futbolistas MX, El Tri has won the battle for another youngster.

After the Aztec squad couldn’t convince Ricardo Pepi to join them, Gerardo Martino and FMF have been able to persuade Richard Ledezma to wear El Tri colors, a decision that could have been influenced by Marcelo Flores’s announcement of choosing Mexico over Canada and England.

Can he play in Qatar 2022?

For now, the 21-year-old is still in the process of acquiring his Mexican passport, something that left him out of the roster for the summer. But given that Gregg Berhalter also left him out of the US roster, as well as Jonathan Gómez and Cade Cowell, all of them Mexican American that have recently inclined to play for Mexico, Ledezma will have options of making it into Qatar if he becomes a regular player for PSV Eindhoven next season.
