Andrés Guardado says the Mexican national team has stagnated and pointed to the culprit

One of the things that Gerardo “Tata” Martino needs to solve before having the final roster that he’ll take to Qatar, is the lack of goals that the Aztec squad has presented in the past year, as the three strikers that he usually calls up haven’t been consistent.

During the CONCACAF Qualifiers, Raúl Jiménez was the top scorer of the Mexican national team, with three goals over 14 games, far from the 13 goals that made Cyle Larin from Canada the top scorer in the confederation.

Henry Martín and Rogelio Funes Mori didn’t do any better as the Club América forward scored two goals, both against Jamaica, and “El Mellizo” only found the net on one occasion, which is why Martino is considering adding another naturalized player to the mix.

Who is the player that Martino wants to call up?

Martino has tried to change the names that he usually calls up in the past few games that El Tri has played, as he gave Santiago Giménez the opportunity of playing for the senior team, although he couldn’t take advantage of the opportunity, as he couldn’t score.

That’s why the Argentine coach has requested the Mexican Football Federation to help Atlas FC’s striker Julio César Furch to speed his paperwork to acquire the Mexican citizenship, according to reports from Mexican news outlet El Universal.

Julio Furch is one of the most consistent strikers that has arrived at Liga MX in the past decade, as he always makes the difference for his team. So far, Furch has played 288 games in Mexican soccer since his arrival back in 2015, scoring 117 goals and 36 assistances.

Is he eligible to play for El Tri?

One of the requirements to be able to play for a national team is to have lived for five straight years in the country, as well as not having played an official game with another national team. Furch has played seven years in Mexico and never debuted with Argentina, which makes him eligible to wear El Tri colors if Martino requires him, as now he only needs his citizenship letter.
