In this way, the Mexican midfielder, winner of the Copa del Rey with Real Betis Balompié was not afraid and said what he thinks about the current situation of El Tri.

Why did Andrés Guardado state that the Mexican National Team has stagnated?

The Betis midfielder was interviewed by Hugo Sánchez as part of his program "Hugo Sánchez presenta", produced by ESPN. And in that interview, the player nicknamed the "Principito" stated that the Mexican national team is stagnant.

The player was very precise in stating that the national teams of the United States and Panama, for example, have grown throughout this time, while the Mexican team has lagged.

And in his statement, he affirmed that the stagnation that El Tri has suffered is large because it no longer competes in Conmebol, and therefore in Concacaf the Mexican national team will not be able to grow if it continues to compete exclusively in this confederation.

"What I have experienced is that at that time we were in third place in the continent and I think that all the teams in South America, Panama, the United States, all have grown and I think we have not. After we lost our participation in CONMEBOL, we have stagnated," said the historic player of El Tri.

It should be clarified that there are two confederations in the American continent: one is the South American Football Confederation, Conmebol for its abbreviation, and the other is Concacaf, whose abbreviation stands for the Confederation of North, Central American, and Caribbean Association Football.

And Mexico is historically located in Concacaf, but on some occasions, the Tricolor squad has competed in Conmebol tournaments, where the demands are high due to the level of the teams that play there.

In addition to Brazil and Argentina, Conmebol also includes Ecuador, Colombia, Peru, and other countries that have always had to give more than 100% to aspire to win any competition or even to qualify for the FIFA World Cup.

And in CONCACAF, the only national teams that compete on par are Mexico, the United States, Canada, and Panama, to name a few, where the level of challenge is not as demanding as in CONMEBOL, so Andrés Guardado's criticism is understandable.

But who is to blame for the Mexican national team not playing in Conmebol tournaments?

According to Andrés Guardado's statements, this seems to be an indirect message to Yon de Luisa, the president of the Mexican Football Federation since 2018, who along with the other members of the body decided that it was best for El Tri to focus strictly only on Concacaf competitions.

As a result, neither Copa Libertadores nor Copa América has returned to having Mexican competitors in their competitions, even though Conmebol, according to what was stated by Alejandro Domínguez, president of the organization, misses Mexican teams.

"Mexico is as much a soccer country as are the teams of South America, and after many years of having played in the Copa Libertadores, South American Cup, and Copa América, suddenly not having Mexico, the rivalry is missed because Mexico is passion", stated the executive.

Will Mexican teams return one day to compete in Conmebol?
