Although he was one of the most promising players that Mexico had a couple of years ago, the lack of opportunities that Diego Lainez has had in La Liga side Real Betis since his arrival in 2019, has made him slowly fade away.

Although the talent is still there, the few playing time that the 21-year-old right-winger has had in the four seasons he’s been in Betis have prevented him from growing, something that could cost him his participation in the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

One of the conditions that Gerardo “Tata” Martino established for him and other players that have been irregular in the past year is to earn more playing time, as he will only call the players that arrive in November at the best level.

According to several reports, Lainez has been looking to leave Real Betis and was close to achieve it over the winter transfer window, although Manuel Pellegrini prevented it as he promised him more playing time in the second half of the season, something that didn’t happen.

Bayer Leverkusen wants him for next season

The broken promise has made him ask for his transfer once the summer transfer window opens, but the high price that Betis paid for him back in 2019 is something that could prevent his departure, as they are not willing to accept less than $17 million for him.

The lack of regularity he’s had in the last season, he played less than 5% of the minutes, added to the $50 million release clause that he has on his contract, is something that will stop almost any team from buying him, although if Betis are willing to send him on a loan, the possibilities open for Diego Lainez.

One of the strongest options for him is in Bundesliga, as Bayer Leverkusen are interested in his addition for next season, especially since they are going to play Champions League and need to increase the number of players in the roster.

How much can he earn in Leverkusen?

Gerardo Seoane, Bayer Leverkusen’s coach, admitted that they’ve been following Lainez for a while and that they are interested in signing him for next season as he would be an improvement for the roster. Leverkusen are willing to pay him up to $2.5 million per season.
