Mexico National Team faced Uruguay on Thursday night on a game where El Tri was no rival for La Celeste, as Los Charrúas crushed 3-0 the Aztec squad with a goal by Matías Vecino and a brace scored by Edinson Cavani.

Although the defeat against Uruguay was the first time that El Tri loses in 2022, it was also the closest thing that they would have to Argentina, team that comfortably beat Italy, UEFA’s current champion, and that will be Mexico’s rival in the group stage of the World Cup.

Gerardo “Tata” Martino couldn’t find a way of breaking the solid midfield that Uruguay had, which cut short the options of reaching Sergio Rochet’s goal and made Raúl Jiménez often leave his position looking to have the ball, as he only had one clear option of scoring during the first half.

Martino’s fate with El Tri is decided

Although Gerardo Martino has been confirmed as the coach that will be in El Tri’s dugout for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, the defeat against Uruguay has ensured that his stint will be over once the Aztec squad is eliminated from Qatar, as FMF still had intentions of renewing him for the 2026 cycle.

But the Argentine coach knows that in the few months that he has in front of the Mexican team, he still has an option of returning them to the winning path, although for that to happen he will have to remove from his blacklist a player that El Tri has been missing.

Even if he’s refused to call up Javier “Chicharito” Hernández since 2019, given the lack of goals that El Tri currently has, Martino won’t have any other choice than to call him up once again, and according to reports from TUDN, “Tata” will meet with him now that El Tri is touring in the United States, to talk about his potential return to the Aztec squad for Qatar.
