Javier “Chicharito” Hernández hasn’t played a single game with Mexico National Team since 2019, on a friendly match were El Tri defeated 3-0 US Soccer MNT, where he scored one of the goals for the Aztec squad.

But the scandals and his lifestyle out of the pitches made Gerardo “Tata” Martino decide to stop calling him, as he was becoming a distraction for everyone else on the roster, in addition to the rough patch he was going through, as he had moved from West Ham United to Sevilla FC but didn’t have enough playing time.

Now, “Chicharito” is entering his third year and second full season in MLS with LA Galaxy, and has improved his performances, after scoring 17 goals in the 2021 MLS Season. His current shape has made him wish to return to El Tri.

Although Gerardo Martino isn’t keen on the idea of having “Chicharito” on his roster again, it’s true that Mexico National Team doesn’t have a back up striker that can replace Raúl Jiménez whenever he’s not on the pitch, as neither Rogelio Funes Mori nor Henry Martín have showed any signs to be that striker.

Will “Chicharito” return to El Tri?

Even if El Tri needs a complement for Raúl Jiménez -who is slowly recovering his label as a scorer with the recent performances of Wolves in Premier League-, for Gerardo Martino, the indiscipline of Javier Hernández is bigger than what he could provide to El Tri.

That’s why he’s considering calling Santiago Giménez, whose name is on the mix to be the third striker of Mexico National Team on the final roster for Qatar 2022, although he hadn’t been called on recent match windows as he hadn’t scored since August.

“Chaquito” Giménez broke his five-month drought last weekend, when Cruz Azul won 4-1 on their visit to Toluca. Giménez scored the last two goals of La Máquina, something he achieved in just 3 minutes. If he keeps up with the good work, he’ll likely be on Martino’s roster.
