Either Funes Mori or Martín won’t make it to Qatar now that Santiago Giménez is on a scoring streak

Gerardo “Tata” Martino will decide most of the players that will be part of the team that goes to Qatar from the roster that he called up for the friendly games that the Mexican national team will play in the next week, as well as the two games from the CONCACAF Nations League.

One of the biggest questions that the Argentine coach will have to solve in the next couple of weeks is which striker will be left out of the final roster, as neither Raúl Jiménez, Rogelio Funes Mori nor Henry Martín have been the striker that can make the difference for El Tri.

Jiménez was able to score three goals in the CONCACAF Qualifiers and given that he’s become a key player for El Tri, as he not only scores but also knows how to open spaces, he has ensured his place in the final roster. But Martino knows that aside from him, he needs other options, which is why he called Santiago Giménez.

Although Giménez only has three caps with the Aztec squad, including the game against Nigeria, he is on pace to earn a spot in the final roster, as he already scored two goals wearing El Tri colors. But if Martino decides to call him up for Qatar, he will replace either Martín or Funes Mori.

Who will be the striker that is left out of the roster?

During the Qualifying stage, the Club América striker had the second-best streak for a Mexican forward, as he was able to find the net on two occasions, both against Jamaica, and even if he had a drought during Clausura 2022, in Liguilla he was able to score two goals, arriving to El Tri camp with more confidence.

On the other hand, Rogelio Funes Mori disappeared both from El Tri and CF Monterrey, as “El Mellizo” only scored one goal for the Aztec squad in the Qualifiers before missing most of the season due to injuries, something that he hasn’t been able to overcome and that already costed him his place in the preliminary list of Martino, showing that his ticket to Qatar is in danger.
