The list of the top scorers of the year in the Mexican's Liga MX, including the Clausura and the Apertura 2020, is led only by non-Mexican born players. Thus, one of the main weaknesses of Mexican players is evident: the lack of goals. That is why Mexican teams prefer foreign strikers.

The Uruguayan Jonathan Rodriguez of Cruz Azul is at the top of the list, with 19 goals in 23 games. Then, the Frenchman André Pierre Gignac is the second top scorer. The 34-year-old Tigres forward has 18 goals in 23 games, including a hat-trick against Pumas UNAM.

The podium is completed by the 32-year-old Angel Mena with 14 goals in 23 games. The Paraguayan Dario Lezcano of Juárez scored 13 goals and is in fourth place. Finally, the Argentinian Juan Ignacio Dinenno of Pumas UNAM is the fifth top scorer in Liga MX with 12 goals.

In addition, only one of the last 17 Mexican tournaments had a Mexican top-scorer. The Mexican Alan Pulido shared first place with the Argentinian Mauro Quiroga in Apertura 2019, both with 12 goals. Before that, the last Mexican to be the top scorer of a tournament was Angel Reyna in the Clausura 2011, when he scored 13 goals.
