FC Barcelona couldn’t beat an Eintracht Frankfurt that surprised everyone on the second leg of the Quarterfinals of the UEFA Europa League, not only because they played like they were on their home turf, but also their followers invaded Camp Nou, as more than 30,000 Die Adler fans were on the stands.
The 3-2 victory of Frankfurt 4-3 on the aggregate- cut short the aspirations of FC Barcelona of finishing the current season with at least one title, as they lost 3-2 against Real Madrid for the Supercopa de España, then lost by the same result against Athletic Club in the round of 16 of Copa del Rey.
Barcelona, who were the favorites to win the Europa League after their 15-unbeaten-game streak, now only have La Liga to try to save the season, but with a Real Madrid eight points away from them and on good shape, it looks like they will have to settle for the ticket to the Champions League next season.
That’s why Joan Laporta knows that it’s the time to start making changes in Barcelona, as this season will be remembered as a failure, not only for the 4 lost tournaments, but also because they let Lionel Messi leave.
Although the Blaugranas know that they must strengthen the squad for the 2022-23 season if they want to avoid another season like this one, they also know that they need to improve their academy teams, as that’s the base for a successful dynasty in modern soccer.
After the success that Xavi Hernández is having with the first team, Joan Laporta wants to replicate what he’s done both in the U-20 and U-17 squads, where the young players are still in formation both of tactic and technique.
That’s why Rafael Márquez could arrive in the U-17 squad, as he’s someone that is identified with the club colors as well as having a good relationship with Xavi Hernández and Javier Mascherano, who will take over the U-20 team.
The Mexico former international has been linked twice to the Blaugranas in the past, in 2018 and more recently in 2021, when Laporta returned to Barcelona. The former captain of El Tri and Barcelona currently lives in Spain, studying to become a coach.
