Jose De Jesus Corona beyond his legendary career in Mexican football is remembered for a brawl in 2011 in the Liga MX semifinal when his club Cruz Azul played against Morelia. Despite a first leg advantage, the result went the way of Morelia, leading to a massive fight where Corona delivered an MMA kick and headbutted Morelia's assistant coach.

How did the brawl start?

Cruz Azul beat Morelia 2-0 in the first leg of the Liga MX semifinal in 2011 and held a clear advantage to reach the final but things went other way and at the 89th minutes, Morelia was leading 3-0 in the match, 3-2 on aggregate which means Cruz Azul will be eliminated. A Morelia fan came on the pitch and insulted Cruz Azul captain Gerardo Torrado and was attacked by Azul players leading to a massive brawl.

What did Corona do in the brawl?

It was free for all and a massive brawl. Morelia physical trainer Sergio Martin slapped Cruz Azul player Waldo Ponce, which made Jose De Jesus Corona deliver an inside leg kick to him, similar to one you would see in the MMA and then headbutted him again. His actions were captured on camera though the referee missed it. The referee gave three red cards, two to Cruz Azul players and one to a Morelia player, he also sent both coaches to the stands for the rest of the match.

What happened to Corona after the incident?

After the act of violence, many in Mexican football called for the suspension of Jose De Jesus Corona and his removal from the national team, he was already named in the squad for the 2011 CONCACAF Gold Cup. He was suspended for six league matches by the Mexican Football Federation (Femexfut) and eventually dropped from the Gold Cup squad and was replaced by Monterrey goalkeeper Jonathan Orozco. "We have decided not to take Jesus Corona to the Gold Cup. We have called up Jonathan Orozco (of Monterrey in his place)," Hector Gonzalez, Femexfut's national teams director said. It was not the end of his El Tri career, he still represented Mexico at the 2014 and 2018 World Cups as well as the 2015 Copa America.

What did Corona say about his punishment?

It was not the first time Jose De Jesus Corona was left out of a national team squad for violent conduct. He was also left out of the México national team squad for the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa after a bar incident where he hit another man. He was not happy with his removal and made a comment. "One works to be the first choice in the team and get to the Tri (Color). It's lamentable what happened. I made a little mistake and I'm out of the national team. I'm upset, I lost control and assumed my responsibility but I'd like to talk to the federation directors to give my story of the reaction."
