Football is generally referred to as a gentleman's game. The rules and regulations in football prevent players from acting in wild or violent ways. Many times, warning cards like Yellow cards or Red cards are given to players who are found guilty of violent conduct on the pitch. In other extremes cases, the player could be fined or banned beyond the yellow card. However, the actions of Cruz Azul goalkeeper, Jose de Jesus Corona, in the semi-final match against Monarcas Morelia was more than just violence. 

What violent act did Jose de Jesus Corona perform against Monarcas Morelia?

In the semi-final match between Mexican sides Cruz Azul and Monarcas Morelia, Azul goalkeeper Jesus Corona was found guilty of kicking and headbutting the assistant coach of Morelia, Sergio Martin. What transpired was that towards the end of the league semi-final between both sides, a fan ran onto the pitch. While authorities were trying to get the fan out, a video showed that Morelia assistant coach, Sergio Martin, slapped a Cruz Azul player, Waldo Ponce.

It was in retaliation to this that Jose de Jesus Corona gave kicked and headbutted Sergio Martin off the pitch. This caused a serious brawl on the pitch with all the Cruz Azul and Morelia players involved. Jesus Corona was sent off and subsequently, he was also removed from Mexico's Gold Cup roster for that year. 

What are the other cases of violence in football?


   Zidane headbutt Marco Materazzi

One of the most popular cases of violence in football was that of Zinedine Zidane and Marco Materazzi during the final of the 2006 FIFA World Cup between France and Italy. During the match, Materazzi had allegedly said some racist words to Zidane which prompted the reaction of the Frenchman. Zidane gave Materazzi a headbutt on the pitch and the Italian fell to the ground. Zinedine Zidane was sent off from the match, banned and fined by FIFA.


   Luis Suarez bites Giorgio Chiellini

Another popular case of violence in football was the case of Luis Suarez and Giorgio Chiellini in the 2014 FIFA World Cup. Uruguayan striker, Luis Suarez bit Chiellini on the shoulder during the Uruguay Vs. Italy match. This violent act resulted in the ban of Luis Suarez from all football-related activities for up to 3 months.
