He was born in Northern Ireland and was bought by Manchester United during its golden age with Sir Alex Ferguson at the helm. Roy Carrol opened his heart to relate his alcohol addiction problems and to tell the depression that he suffered throughout his professional career. One of the great figures of the arches during the year 2005 in the United Kingdom, he had a great decline personally mainly after a major injury when he was defending the West Ham shirt.
Mental health is an important issue in the world of football and Roy set an example again in this regard. Not being able to play and having too much time at his house, his problems slowly started. “He had never had a long-term recovery injury. He was not mentally prepared for that. He was alone in a dark room, taking large amounts. I had no help from the outside world”, he revealed in a conversation with the British newspaper Daily Mail.
And he added about how his personality obscured reality: “Nobody knew it was wrong because I never spoke about it. Everyone thought that he was the happiest person in the world but the reality is that he would come to my house, close the door, hit my head against the wall and start drinking”.
Furthermore, he explained that alcohol addiction and sadness went hand in hand with him. “Alcohol was a way to make depression go away. Every day that passed was worse, it does not work. I went to rehab for the people around me: my wife, my agent, and my friends. I didn't see what was wrong with my life, that was the big problem”, explained the 43-year-old footballer who is still active in the semi-professional league where he defends the Dunfannon goal from Northern Ireland.
