Cruz Azul disappointed their fans once again. They had beaten Pumas 4-0 in the first leg of Guard1anes 2020 semifinals and only needed not to lose by four goals in the second leg to advance to the final. But Pumas beat them 4-0, got the heroic comeback and will face León in the decisive instance.

In the last years, the Maquina Cementera won an infamous reputation of failing in important moments, with last night defeat being a highlight on the 23 years the club is going through without winning a league title. Maybe this was the saddest defeat, because Pumas’ comeback set a precedent in Liga MX.

On Twitter, the statistics journalist Mister Chip confirmed the stat everybody was thinking about: this has been the first time a team blew a 4-0 lead since there are two legs in knockout rounds in Mexican soccer. This disgraceful and unlikely fact is one of the lowest points in Cruz Azul’s negative streak.

Before the first leg, it was said Cruz Azul was virtually in the final. But as Golden State Warriors in 2016 and Atlanta Falcons in Super Bowl LI, they suffered a humiliating and shocking defeat that will never be forgotten. Fans had surely hopes of finally winning Liga MX this year, but they will have to keep waiting.
