Manchester United spent over £100m in the summer with the recruitment of Jadon Sancho, Raphaël Varane and Cristiano Ronaldo and are planning to spend more due to the abysmal performance of the team, most notably through a weak link in defensive midfield.

Much of the pressure in the club and the media are on manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer but the club's hierarchy are backing him and would support him with further funds in January to make more signings and have a very good defensive midfielder in his ranks as the likes of Nemanja Matic, Scott McTominay and Fred have not produced the best combination.

According to English tabloid Daily Star, the board has approved a whopping sum of £70m to he spent in the January transfer window with the defensive midfield as the priority with Monaco midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni top of the list of their wanted defensive midfielders.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is in his fourth season at the club having replaced José Mourinho in December 2018 and has spent over £450m on signings but is yet to win a trophy, his best so far coming in the penalty shootout loss to Villarreal in the Europa League final last year.
