The crippling millionaire debts that FC Barcelona has and make Lionel Messi worried
The club is in a very fragile economic state and the monetary obligations are destroying the club little by little.
These are not good times at FC Barcelona. The money is lacking and there are no incomes at the moment. The new board is trying to get things right and the election winner will have a difficult task when he takes over the club. But there are debts to pay that are compromising the future of the Cules.
They need to pay to other clubs a huge sum of money that reaches the two hundred million euro. And the majority of it comes from transfers that were not successful but a big waste of money. They still owe Liverpool 40 million euros for Philippe Coutinho, bought in 2018, and have to give Ajax 48 million for Frenkie De Jong.
But the most concerning number comes from the total debt, that looks like a killer for the economy of FC Barcelona: 1.173 billion dollar. The club got expensive loans and got money that was mismanaged. And now they are suffering the consequences, with a club that has the bank accounts in danger.
This could be bad news regarding Lionel Messi. The club wants to extend the contract of the Argentinian but if they have no money, they will not be able to afford him, and his departure might be unavoidable. In that case, FC Barcelona will have to face a less competitive future.
